Charlie Mackesy’s beautifully illustrated picture book, The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse, has captured a nation during a difficult time, with its pages filled with messages of empathy and self-care that only the cold hearted amongst us would fail to be touched by them.

I bought this book as a gift for my daughter to help her through a challenging time, and I knew instantly that she would love, not just the words but the pictures too.  It sits proudly on her bookshelf and she wasn’t embarrassed to say that she had a little cry whilst reading it.

I have seen so many people talk about this tiny piece of comfort, from people struggling with their mental health, to key workers sharing the words with patients, to teachers adding this to their online classes.

I should have bought a book for myself, not because I am struggling, but to remind me that there is kindness still in a very unkind world.

What I didn’t know at the time, was the same Charlie who had drawn two of the pictures hanging on my bedroom wall; they caught my eye instantly too.
